About me
My name is Emilee Keuten, and I recently graduated from Louisiana State University- Shreveport this May to obtain my Specialist in School Psychology degree. This year, I had the opportunity to complete my final internship for my graduate program with Prosper ISD, which I have absolutely adored. While in Prosper Schools, I have met many incredible people who genuinely care about our students and one another. I am so excited to continue working with Prosper this year and have this opportunity to speak with all of you about topics I am passionate about. While in graduate school, I worked part-time as a teacher for a very small class in a resource placement. Many of my students were identified as being on the autism spectrum or having an intellectual or learning disability. While working for this school, our team faced many challenges including feeling understaffed, underfunded, and at times, unaware of the best way to support our students. During this experience, it seemed all the activities I could find online or from coworkers did not apply to my students, or they had deficits within their executive functioning that made learning a challenge. Specifically in their motivation to learn, engagement in impulsive behaviors, limited attention, emotional dysregulation, and poor organization. Considering my experiences and the information shared with me from educators in the district, these presentations (Autism in the Classroom and Empowering Minds: Understanding and Supporting Executive Functioning in the Classroom) were developed to bring awareness to autism and executive functioning, discuss the potential causes of weaknesses in EF skills, and how to best support students experiencing these deficits across age groups and ability levels.
