In this professional development session, we will explore effective strategies for teaching phonological awareness that go beyond the traditional "Letter of the Week" approach. Participants will learn how to build a strong foundation in early literacy through activities that focus on sound recognition, rhyming, syllable segmentation, and blending, rather than relying solely on introducing one letter at a time. By shifting the focus to auditory and cognitive skills, we’ll discuss how to promote deeper understanding and application of phonics, helping students develop essential skills for reading and writing. Teachers will leave with practical, research-based strategies and tools to foster a more holistic approach to phonological awareness in their classrooms.
